The Arsenale to the Dogana Walk

This walk traces Venice’s rise as a maritime republic, where the sea replaced farmland, walls, and fresh water as the city’s lifeline. It highlights the Arsenale, Piazza San Marco, and the Riva degli Schiavoni, where shipbuilding, trade, and waterfront labor powered Venice’s empire. The route also shows how the city later became a cultural landscape through the Biennale. From the Arsenale to Punta della Salute and Punta della Dogana, it follows the edge where state power met open water.

- 01 Arsenale di Venezia
The heart of Venice’s naval shipbuilding empire, where the republic mass-produced galleys and warships and projected maritime power across the Mediterranean.
- 02 Campo San Zaccaria
A noble yet strategically placed church near the eastern waterfront, echoing the republic’s fusion of piety, statecraft, and access to the sea.
- 03 Riva degli Schiavoni
A working waterfront where sailors, merchants, and laborers animated the edge of the republic, linking the city’s palaces to the lagoon economy.
- 04 Palazzo Ducale / Doge's Palace
The Doge's Palace was the seat of the Venetian Republic’s government and the doge’s residence. Its Gothic facade and lavish state rooms make it one of Venice’s most important landmarks.
- 05 Torre dell'Orologio / Clock Tower
The Torre dell’Orologio is Venice’s famous Renaissance clock tower on the north side of Piazza San Marco. Its astronomical clock and blue-and-gold dial have long been one of the city’s best-known features.
- 06 Piazza San Marco
The political heart of the republic, where state rituals, imperial ambition, and the city’s maritime identity were staged in public view.
- 07 Procuratie Vecchie
The Procuratie Vecchie are the historic arcaded buildings on the north side of Piazza San Marco, once used as offices and residences for the procurators of St. Mark. Their long facade helped define the square’s monumental form.
- 08 Teatro La Fenice
A famous opera house that offers major cultural appeal, though it is less directly tied to the naval and waterfront storyline than the top-ranked stops.
- 09 Museo della Musica
A compact museum stop that offers cultural variety and a glimpse of Venice’s musical life, but it sits outside the tour’s strongest shipyard and fortress narrative.
- 10 Fondamenta degli Incurabili
A waterside edge in Castello that evokes the lived world behind the republic’s grandeur: modest housing, labor, movement, and the social texture of a working maritime district.
- 11 Punta della Salute
The promontory opposite San Marco, where the city’s maritime edge is staged with dramatic force and the geometry of Venice’s water-borne urbanism is most visible.
- 12 Punta della Dogana
A customs point at the mouth of the Grand Canal, where trade, maritime control, and waterfront defense met under republican authority.
