The Commercial Drive Rebels Walk

This walk through Commercial Drive traces how immigrant café culture, activism, queer community-building, and street art shaped one of Vancouver’s most politically outspoken neighbourhoods. After the Second World War, Italian immigrants helped make the Drive known for bakeries, espresso, and lively cafés. In the late 1960s and 1970s, artists, students, and organizers helped turn East Vancouver into a hub of grassroots politics and queer life. From the East Van Cross to Kokomo, the route shows how community, protest, and visual culture became part of nearly every block.
